Following the Federal Reserve's quarter-point interest rate increase, President Donald Trump has called for a rate cut, directly opposing the central bank's decision. The move clashes with his repeated demands for cheaper borrowing costs.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Trump stated that US rates "should be at 1%, or even lower," citing that "our country is thriving on the back of new investment" and holds "the best credit in the world." He added, "Lower US interest rates, and do it fast!"
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) unanimously voted to raise the federal funds rate target range to 3.75%-4% on Wednesday, a decision that could strain relations between Trump and his chosen Fed Chair, Kevin Warsh. Although Trump's post did not mention Warsh by name, the sharp rhetoric increases pressure on the Fed leader. Earlier this year, when Warsh was sworn in, Trump had encouraged him to maintain "complete independence."
