Recently, the Mengdong Border Police Station in Cangyuan County, together with Cangyuan Mobile Branch, organized a themed legal awareness event for the 2026 National Cybersecurity Awareness Week at Huluhu Park. The initiative brought cybersecurity education directly into the community, using an immersive and down-to-earth approach to make cyber safety knowledge a part of residents' everyday lives.
"Every day I get a flood of text links and strange private messages. I can't tell what's real and what's fake — I'm afraid to click on them, afraid to delete them, and it leaves me feeling uneasy." This concern, voiced by a resident at the information booth, captured the widespread cybersecurity anxiety felt across the local community. The event zeroed in on these real-world pain points, employing an interactive format that combined face-to-face Q&A sessions, targeted one-on-one explanations, and hands-on guidance to precisely address residents' needs and break down barriers to effective cybersecurity outreach.
Throughout the day, leisure walkers, visiting tourists, and food delivery riders all stopped to ask questions. Officers drew on real local case studies, using plain language to explain how common scams work — including AI face-swapping fraud, click-farming rebate schemes, and game top-up scams. They also shared practical tips on identifying suspicious links, protecting personal information, and avoiding online rumors, vividly exposing the tricks behind various cyber traps while answering the everyday security questions residents raised.
"So a video or voice message from a stranger — even if it shows a familiar face—might be AI-generated?" an elderly man remarked as the realization dawned on him. He immediately pulled out his phone to ask for advice on daily protection measures. Recognizing that senior citizens and other vulnerable groups often lack awareness in these areas, the staff distributed educational brochures while also conducting practical training sessions. They guided participants step-by-step through the process of downloading and registering the National Anti-Fraud Center app, demonstrating core functions such as incoming call alerts, risk queries, and suspicious activity reporting—helping residents activate their own mobile security defenses.
The vivid case examples, clear demonstrations, and warm interactions made complex cybersecurity concepts easy to grasp and remember, significantly boosting the public's ability to spot scams and protect themselves. The Mengdong Border Police Station plans to make cybersecurity promotion an ongoing, long-term effort. It will continue to focus on key groups such as seniors, teenagers, and migrant workers, carrying out targeted legal education through home visits, market stall talks, and fixed-point awareness sessions—building a comprehensive digital safety net for the entire border community and safeguarding residents' clean, secure digital lives.
