US Diesel Prices Surpass $6.50 Per Gallon, Wartime Pressures Worsen Global Fuel Crunch

American retail diesel prices have crossed the $6.50 per gallon mark for the first time, extending a conflict-fueled rally that is sending shockwaves through the wider economy. According to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA), the national average hit $6.505 per gallon as of Saturday. The surge has accelerated since September, with prices climbing more than 87 cents this month alone, rising on a near-daily basis and breaking the previous record set in 2022.

The US-Iran conflict has kept global supplies of this essential fuel under pressure, with shipments through the strategic Strait of Hormuz still restricted. Meanwhile, crude oil cargo volumes from the region have not fully bounced back to pre-war levels, limiting fuel production at refineries across the rest of the globe. Compounding the issue, Russia has banned most fuel exports and could extend these restrictions into October, while Ukrainian drone strikes continue to hit the country's refining facilities. Over the weekend, a Moscow refinery was targeted in one of the largest overnight aerial barrages of the year.

Most American drivers do not fuel their cars with diesel. But this fuel, which powers trucks, farm equipment, generators, ships, trains, and home heating systems, touches virtually every corner of the economy. With midterm elections approaching, record diesel prices could undermine support for President Donald Trump's Republican Party in agricultural states like Iowa and in states such as Maine that rely heavily on heating oil. That said, there is a small measure of relief for truckers and consumers, even if it goes unnoticed. According to the Washington-based think tank Institute for Progress, current prices remain below the 2022 peak when adjusted for inflation.
