Swedish autonomous trucking developer Einride AB (ENRD.US) announced a strategic collaboration with NVIDIA (NVDA.US) on Monday aimed at accelerating the development and deployment of self-driving heavy-duty trucks. Following the announcement, Einride's shares surged more than 20% in premarket trading.

As part of the agreement, Einride will adapt NVIDIA's DRIVE Hyperion platform for heavy-duty trucks, expanding its computing, sensor, software, and safety architecture to meet the demands of freight operations. Einride also plans to leverage NVIDIA's Blackwell architecture at scale through the NVIDIA Exemplar Cloud partner program for training, testing, and optimizing its autonomous driving models. NVIDIA will supply the underlying compute platform and AI tools for Einride's self-driving system.

Where the collaboration stands

Einride Chief Technology Officer Henrik Green stated: "We have the customers, the operational experience, and the technology. Building the next-generation Einride Driver on the NVIDIA Hyperion platform will allow us to scale autonomous deployment across the freight network we already serve."

Einride currently operates hundreds of electric trucks for large freight customers across the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. The company projects demand will grow to between 1,500 and 2,000 vehicles by 2028, with approximately 80% of those suitable for automation in the medium term. These additional vehicles will complement the driverless trucks already in operation.

NVIDIA's Vice President of Automotive Business, Rishi Dhall, noted that autonomous trucks—which operate with minimal human intervention—offer an opportunity to improve safety and efficiency in global freight transportation.

Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Stockholm, Einride began trading on the Nasdaq this summer following its merger with blank-check company Legato Merger Corp. III. The transaction valued Einride's equity at $1.35 billion before accounting for transaction proceeds. The company develops electric autonomous freight vehicles and software platforms for clients including PepsiCo (PEP.US) and European brewers Carlsberg and Heineken (HEINY.US).

The partnership with NVIDIA represents the latest step toward broader adoption of autonomous or driverless trucks. This follows the expansion of Alphabet (GOOGL.US)-owned Waymo's autonomous ride-hailing taxis and Tesla's (TSLA.US) robotaxis in U.S. cities. Additionally, Daimler Truck's North American operations have been testing highway trucks for the U.S. market, and Caterpillar's (CAT.US) autonomous and remote-controlled bulldozers have already been deployed at select landfill sites.
