According to the Ministry of Commerce's Department of E-commerce, China's e-commerce landscape from January to August 2026 demonstrated robust and progressive development, integrating online and offline channels to enhance consumption scale and quality while leveraging digital intelligence to drive industrial upgrades. The "Silk Road E-commerce" initiative has also broadened its network of partner countries, deepening international economic and trade collaboration.
Digital consumption is seamlessly merging online and offline experiences. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics reveals that nationwide online retail sales of goods and services grew by 4.6% year-on-year during the January-August period, with goods sales rising 4.3% and services sales climbing 5.1%. The Ministry of Commerce estimates this activity contributed 1.3 percentage points to the overall growth in total retail sales of consumer goods and services. Sales of digital and health-related products saw notable gains, with Ministry of Commerce big data monitoring showing a 6.8% increase in mobile phone online retail sales and a 6.9% rise in outdoor clothing during the same period.
Instant retail and online services are becoming deeply integrated into consumer scenarios. National Bureau of Statistics data indicates that instant retail transaction values grew at a double-digit rate in the first eight months. Meanwhile, monitoring of key e-commerce platforms by the Ministry of Commerce shows online retail sales for tourism and lifestyle services jumped 23.8% and 15.6%, respectively.
Industrial e-commerce is accelerating digital and intelligent transformation. By capitalizing on technological and data advantages, e-commerce is enhancing the efficiency and quality of digital upgrades across agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The "Digital Commerce for Agriculture" initiative has made significant headway, with online retail sales of agricultural products increasing 12.5% year-on-year, as tracked by Ministry of Commerce big data. E-commerce is also unleashing the potential of industrial clusters. For instance, online sales from industry belts such as electric bicycles in Wuxi, Jiangsu; dendrobium in Lu'an, Anhui; and eyewear in Xiamen, Fujian, have grown by 67.3%, 23.6%, and 11.8%, respectively. Furthermore, e-commerce is fueling notable growth in the information, transportation, and logistics service sectors. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the production indices for information transmission, software and IT services, as well as transportation, warehousing, and postal services, grew by 9.6% and 4.8% in August alone.
The Silk Road E-commerce initiative is solidifying international economic and trade partnerships. China has newly established bilateral e-commerce cooperation mechanisms with Jordan and Kyrgyzstan, expanding the number of partner countries to 38. The ongoing "Silk Road E-commerce Benefits the World" thematic activities continue to enrich the domestic consumer market with high-quality products from partner nations. For example, the China-Iceland E-commerce Week facilitated sales of local specialty skincare and health products to China, exceeding 10 million yuan. Ministry of Commerce big data monitoring shows that from January to August, online retail sales of camel milk from Kazakhstan, coffee beans from Kenya, and steaks from Argentina surged by 308.2%, 80.9%, and 36.3%, respectively.
